Exploring Burns Shopping Mall: A Kilmarnock Landmark

Burns Shopping Mall, located in the heart of Kilmarnock, offers a unique shopping experience, though opinions about the mall's condition and offerings vary widely. Here's an overview of what to expect when visiting this shopping center.

On-Site Services

The mall features a variety of on-site services including shops like Argos, Home Bargains, and a pound shop. While some visitors appreciate these options, many have noted the lack of variety due to several vacant units, making for a less vibrant atmosphere.

Accessibility Features

A significant advantage of Burns Shopping Mall is its wheelchair-accessible entrance and a wheelchair-accessible car park. The layout allows for easier navigation for those using mobility aids, although some reviews suggest that better signage and maintenance could further enhance accessibility.

Visitor Experiences

Reviews present a mixed bag of experiences at the mall. Some patrons commend the friendly staff and the convenience of having essential services under one roof, such as pharmacies and grocery stores. However, numerous comments express disappointment over the mall's run-down appearance, with descriptions likening it to "war-torn" conditions and highlighting issues like leaking roofs and poor security. One visitor mentioned, “It’s functional as all the shops I need are under one room,” pointing out the practical aspect despite the aesthetic shortcomings.

Concerns About Safety and Cleanliness

Many reviews reflect concerns regarding safety, particularly due to the presence of unruly behavior around the mall. Comments about drug-related activities and encounters with loitering individuals have been prevalent, leading some shoppers to recommend avoiding the area if possible. Regular mention of the scent of urine and cleanliness indicates ongoing maintenance challenges. Nevertheless, some customers appreciate the cleanliness maintained by the staff, who work diligently to keep the shopping environment tidy, even amidst the challenges.

Additional Amenities

While the mall features essential amenities like toilets, some patrons have pointed out that their availability can be inconsistent, which can be a disadvantage for families or those needing regular access. Reviewers have suggested that updates to restroom facilities could enhance the overall experience.

Conclusion: Is Burns Shopping Mall Worth a Visit?

While Burns Shopping Mall offers convenient on-site services and accessibility features, its reputation is marred by issues of safety and aesthetics. It holds potential for improvement through revitalization efforts that could attract more shoppers and fill the vacant units. For those in Kilmarnock, it remains a spot worth visiting for specific needs, particularly on rainy days when its sheltered environment offers a brief escape from the elements. However, cautious visitors should be prepared for the complexities that accompany its current state.

Victoria Moore (05/06/2025, 10:57):
Like many shopping centers in Scotland, the Burns Mall seems to be on its last legs. It is in desperate need of a complete overhaul or perhaps even to be completely torn down, as it offers very little besides a hangout spot for the various characters of the town. Currently, it hosts the usual array of discount stores, Greggs, Argos, and Farmfoods, along with one of THREE Boots the Chemists within a 200-yard radius.

It does earn a bonus star for providing a convenient sheltered route to the bus station when it's raining.

You're unlikely to find anything particularly appealing or necessary at this shopping center.

Update March 2022 - still just as bad, if not slightly worse. Can I give it a half-star downgrade?

This wee mall is quite delightful, isn't it? Quite a shame that Argos has closed its doors, though. One major downside that deters me from frequenting this mall is the early closure of the public toilets, especially for those with disabilities like myself. It seems they shut down about 1-2 hours before the mall itself closes. The external kiosk toilet is hardly ever in operation, and there are no public restrooms in the bus station either. We have to travel a good 12 miles each way to visit, so the lack of accessible facilities is truly inconvenient.

The stores that are still open are absolutely brilliant. Top-notch service, a wide variety of options, and fantastic prices. You can pretty much find everything you need right here. It's quite a pity though, seeing so many vacant units around the place.

This shopping mall is always a hive of activity, but it has gained a bit of a reputation due to the characters you may encounter. Most, if not all, of the retail spaces are filled with shops. I would give it three stars mainly because of the constant barrage of salespeople trying to get your attention as you make your way through. It can feel like running a marathon dodging them!
Joseph Kim (25/05/2025, 19:20):
Fantastic little shopping center with a variety of options, including fast food, newspapers, a pound shop, and Farm Foods. Conveniently located near a bus station and taxi rank for easy access.
Grace Graham (25/05/2025, 17:32):
This place brought back memories of a post-war Afghanistan, just without the dust. A grimy pit of STIs that hasn't met a bottle of bleach since Duran Duran dropped Rio.
Randy Thompson (25/05/2025, 04:15):
It ain't what it used to be, but it gets the job done! I can find all the shops I need in one place, and there's even a pharmacy there.
