Exploring Burns Shopping Mall: A Kilmarnock Landmark

Burns Shopping Mall, located in the heart of Kilmarnock, offers a unique shopping experience, though opinions about the mall's condition and offerings vary widely. Here's an overview of what to expect when visiting this shopping center.

On-Site Services

The mall features a variety of on-site services including shops like Argos, Home Bargains, and a pound shop. While some visitors appreciate these options, many have noted the lack of variety due to several vacant units, making for a less vibrant atmosphere.

Accessibility Features

A significant advantage of Burns Shopping Mall is its wheelchair-accessible entrance and a wheelchair-accessible car park. The layout allows for easier navigation for those using mobility aids, although some reviews suggest that better signage and maintenance could further enhance accessibility.

Visitor Experiences

Reviews present a mixed bag of experiences at the mall. Some patrons commend the friendly staff and the convenience of having essential services under one roof, such as pharmacies and grocery stores. However, numerous comments express disappointment over the mall's run-down appearance, with descriptions likening it to "war-torn" conditions and highlighting issues like leaking roofs and poor security. One visitor mentioned, “It’s functional as all the shops I need are under one room,” pointing out the practical aspect despite the aesthetic shortcomings.

Concerns About Safety and Cleanliness

Many reviews reflect concerns regarding safety, particularly due to the presence of unruly behavior around the mall. Comments about drug-related activities and encounters with loitering individuals have been prevalent, leading some shoppers to recommend avoiding the area if possible. Regular mention of the scent of urine and cleanliness indicates ongoing maintenance challenges. Nevertheless, some customers appreciate the cleanliness maintained by the staff, who work diligently to keep the shopping environment tidy, even amidst the challenges.

Additional Amenities

While the mall features essential amenities like toilets, some patrons have pointed out that their availability can be inconsistent, which can be a disadvantage for families or those needing regular access. Reviewers have suggested that updates to restroom facilities could enhance the overall experience.

Conclusion: Is Burns Shopping Mall Worth a Visit?

While Burns Shopping Mall offers convenient on-site services and accessibility features, its reputation is marred by issues of safety and aesthetics. It holds potential for improvement through revitalization efforts that could attract more shoppers and fill the vacant units. For those in Kilmarnock, it remains a spot worth visiting for specific needs, particularly on rainy days when its sheltered environment offers a brief escape from the elements. However, cautious visitors should be prepared for the complexities that accompany its current state.

It was quite a challenge navigating through this shopping mall. I found myself constantly approached by sellers in such a crowded space, which made my visit today quite overwhelming. Charities and utility services were competing for attention, bombarding me with questions about phones and various other things. What should have been a pleasant shopping experience turned chaotic. I overheard an elderly lady saying she would no longer shop here, which defeats the purpose of a shopping mall - driving customers away.

Argos, Greggs, and Pound Shop are the ones keeping this shopping mall lively. The town really needs a better Farmfoods that is easily accessible by car, like the store in Irvine. Plus, it serves as a convenient walk-through to reach the bus station. Sadly, the town seems to be slowly fading away ☹

If you ever find yourself wondering about a post-apocalyptic world, the Burns Mall offers a unique experience. With its make-believe no-entry fence and the remnants of birds no longer gracing the skies, this mall lets you explore a desolate landscape in your mind. While there are no functioning restrooms, there are visible spots where nature calls have been answered. For the bold explorers, venturing to the rear of the mall may add a thrill to your visit. Exciting, isn't it?
John Roberts (11/07/2025, 17:41):
Quite a shocking shopping ordeal, I must say. The sight of local drug users loitering around the entrances gives off a rather apocalyptic vibe, almost reminiscent of a scene from a zombie movie. I would recommend steering clear of this place and opting for much better shopping options nearby. Cheers!

Handy for budget-friendly stores, featuring Poundland, Bargain Buys, Home Bargains, and Greggs. It may not be as bustling as it once was, but it remains a go-to spot in the town center for families and youngsters. A perfect refuge on a rainy day! :-) You're likely to run into a familiar face from the neighborhood while you're there.
Thomas Kim (09/07/2025, 23:25):
The shopping mall ain't too shabby, got a decent selection of shops, although it could use some sprucing up for sure...
Bryan Reed (09/07/2025, 03:01):
Cozy and tidy on a dreary day. It's not a huge space, so there aren't too many shops, but there are restrooms and it's conveniently located on the way to the bus station.
Mark Perry (07/07/2025, 18:54):
Plenty of stores all in one place, no trash scattered about. Cleaners bustling all day, restrooms are complimentary, neat and well-lit.
Ralph Smith (30/06/2025, 18:19):
That shopping mall is really convenient, mate. It's located right by the taxi rank and the bus station, perfect for folks without wheels. Plus, you can find just about everything you need there. Cheers!
Christina James (26/06/2025, 14:13):
The entrance to the shopping mall facing the square is an ideal spot for observing fascinating characters. You'd be quite fortunate not to catch a glimpse of these creatures rummaging around during business hours. It serves as a valuable opportunity to educate young ones about the risks associated with substance abuse.
Patrick Williams (22/06/2025, 15:28):
Absolutely adore this place! I could easily go on a shopping spree and just keep spending. The staff are fantastic and made my shopping experience truly enjoyable.
Stephen Garcia (22/06/2025, 01:17):
BUSINESS FOLKS ARE REALLY PUTTING IN THE HOURS TO KEEP THINGS AFLOAT DURING THESE CHALLENGING TIMES. KEEP PUSHING FORWARD AS JOBS ARE SO IMPORTANT. BEST OF LUCK TO EVERYONE WORKING IN BUSINESSES ACROSS SCOTLAND. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND WISHING YOU ALL THE VERY BEST! 🎅
Amelia Mitchell (21/06/2025, 10:54):
Compact yet exquisitely designed. I must give a shoutout to the facilities team, they are constantly on the go. The mall is consistently spotless.
Alexander Evans (20/06/2025, 13:01):
The mall is a bit run down and it seems like the kids are running wild causing a bit of chaos. There doesn't seem to be much shopping options around here. You'd probably have a better experience heading over to Silverburn instead.
Sean Foster (18/06/2025, 22:33):
Convenient for multi storey parking and the bus station. There are several affordable stores along with the usual assortment of trinkets. Do we really need so many vaping shops in the world?
Ethan Kim (16/06/2025, 16:47):
Dark, cliché post-industrial Scotland imitating 70's Albania.
A spot for junkies, rough characters, underachievers, and unsophisticated locals.

You can't help but feel the need for a thorough scrub down with Dettol after strolling through the vicinity.
Not a dig at the hardworking cleaners or staff in this stark, faux marble curiosity.
They've been dealt the Ayrshire version of an eternal trial.
Upon exiting, you're greeted by the grim reality of the Kilmarnock cab stand—ankle-deep in fag butts, dog mess, and oily trash.
Then there's the decaying concrete torment chamber known as the bus station... its sole merit being its lack of rats... they're wise enough to steer clear of the inhabitants... the bus station is far from safe, even during daylight hours, a stabbing, an assault, a cutting could happen at any moment.
The brain behind that mall was likely some sort of trendy, hipster type who had binged one too many episodes of Space: 1999.
One can almost picture him chuckling to himself after sipping blue nun wine, feeling fortunate to be compensated for his "groovy" concept.
Let's hope this nightmare wasn't christened in honor of Robert Burns.
Kelly Green (16/06/2025, 06:15):
The poundland and home bargains are pretty decent, but I reckon not many of the shops will be reopening from the looks of it. It's not the best spot for clothes shopping, but it's great for cleaning products and such. Cheers!
Bryan King (14/06/2025, 11:46):
I waited until 5:30pm before heading to the Shopping mall to avoid the hustle and bustle. I only encountered 2 or 3 folks, so no worries about keeping a safe distance. There's a big bottle of hand sanitizer across from Farmfoods if you need to clean your hands. I'm not sure if there are more around, as I only visited the pound shop. Overall, it was a pleasant experience.
Amelia Ross (13/06/2025, 06:27):
The shops offer excellent value and the staff are always friendly. However, the availability of toilets can be inconsistent, which can be a nightmare when you have two small children. Additionally, being approached by sellers who have paid for space in the mall can be off-putting, as they can be quite persistent even when you say no. I have had the experience of being followed into a shop by a seller despite repeatedly expressing my lack of interest. It's a shame because it ends up affecting the shops negatively.
Vincent Kelly (11/06/2025, 20:59):
This shopping center leaves much to be desired. The stores mostly cater to budget shoppers and the roof leaks like a sieve. Personally, I found the original Duke Street shopping area to be a superior choice for a shopping experience.
